Avril Lavigne on Her 'Emotionally Raw' New Record, Deryck Whibley + Why She Won't Appear on Reality TV
Avril Lavigne has moved beyond the teen sensation tag, leaving behind the mall-punk posturing and angsty girl hiding behind sweeping bangs and heavy eyeliner. With four albums under her no-longer-studded belt, Lavigne has proven staying power and, based on her latest album 'Goodbye Lullaby,' the new-found maturity suits her well.
About to embark on a cross-country tour of her Canadian homeland -- the jaunt kicks off Oct. 1 in Victoria, B.C. -- the singer, who moonlights as a fashion designer and Ford model, spoke to AOL about her "emotionally raw" new record, why single 'Wish You Were Here' was brought about by ex-husband and Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley, her reality TV star boyfriend Brody Jenner (yup, from the infamous Kardashian/Jenner clan) and why she'd, like, totally be aNirvana groupie if the band was still around.
You wrote 'Darlin',' one of the songs off 'Goodbye Lullaby,' nearly a decade ago. Why record it all these years later?
I learned that song in Napanee in my parents family room and every time I hear it I totally think about that room. That was before I even had a record deal or anything; I was 14 or 15 when I wrote it. So it totally brings back memories. It was also always one of those songs I remembered and I was always playing it for my friends. Oddly enough, Deryck produced the song. The day I met him -- when I was, like, 17 and 'Complicated' was just coming out -- we were in Vancouver with his band, all hanging out, and I played him that song and then like eight years later he produced it. He remembered it and was like, "Let's record this song." So we did. You've said your new single 'Wish You Were Here' really shows off your vulnerable side. A lot of people assume the lyrics are about your divorce from Deryck?
People will always make their assumptions. I never really get into exact detail about what my songs are about. I put them out there and hope they inspire people. The message with 'Wish You Were Here' is looking back and remembering all the good times and missing somebody. And we all go through missing someone at some point in our lives, whether it's someone we've separated from or had a falling out with. I'm really happy to have this song be released, it really represents this album.

Since releasing 'Goodbye Lullaby' in March, you've toured all over the world. Are there any standout moments from backstage or meeting fans that have stayed with you?
Right now there's a few different girls that have been traveling around to every show and they're in the front row -- and that's very dedicated, that's hardcore, they're like No. 1 fans. So stuff like that is really cool, and to meet them and hug them. I like jumping into the pit, the crowd, and seeing people cry when I touch their hands. That's special. If you were in a different place and time, is there a band you'd follow from city to city as their No. 1 fan?
Probably Nirvana. When I was younger I really loved them and really loved rock 'n' roll music with bands like Blink 182and Pennywise. That's the kind of stuff I liked, headbanging stuff. So far, has there been one 'Goodbye Lullaby' track that audiences have identified with the most?
Every country is different with the requests people make.Do you listen to requests?
I do. I ask people stuff over Twitter. Like, "What do you guys want to hear tonight?" I love Twitter for that, because you get a response right away. It's really, really cool. And now you get to ask your Canadian fans what they want to hear what with your big cross-country tour. How does it feel to be coming home? Will you visit Napanee?
I'm excited to be back. I get to see my family and my old friends from high-school, and it brings back memories from my childhood. And everyone is always so warm. My family doesn't live [in Napanee] anymore but I always try to stop in at La Pizzeria and talk to the owners. They have a pizza called the Avril Lavigne Pizza.
